Ala would love nothing more than to become a ballerina, so she tries to get accepted to the infamous Russian Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg. Getting accepted to this school is no easy task. Most applicants are rejected, some even more than once. In ‘52 Percent’, we follow Alla and her fellow aspirants throughout the selection procedure. The camera follows them closely as they dance before a panel of sternlooking judges and are subjected to a rigorous medical examination. During the exam, we discover that Alla’s legs are 0.4 percent too short to meet the admission requirements. But Alla will not let this stand in her way. With the help of her mother, she does painful exercises at home that will hopefully lengthen her legs.
