Martin Bruch

‘home.movie’ is a cinematic selfportrait and the actual description of a period in the life of the hand wheelchair driver Martin Bruch. The increasing immobility due to the gradual development of his illness (multiple sclerosis) changes his everyday life, the view of his surroundings and the visual field. With the camera mounted on the wheel chair and the ceiling hoist Martin Bruch travels through his flat and shows exclusively a subjective view. The outer room becomes the inner room and vice versa. The ride with the ceiling hoist becomes an ‘over ride’ a notional high speed roller coaster ride that ends with the crash of the camera and brings him back to reality.

Martin Bruch

Martin Bruch was born in 1961 in Hall in Tirol, living and working in Vienna as boom operator in films. The affliction with multiple sclerosis required a change from the film set into the film-sound studio. Ten years of work as a sound effects archivist followed. After repeatedly falling over with his scooter (and later with his wheel chair) Bruch discovered a new perspective and took photos immediately after each accident. These photographs were collected as book and exhibition under the title Crash Landings. Exhibitions (selection): Biennale di Venecia, Sadler’s Well London, Conversation Centre Liverpool, Künstlerhaus Graz. Filmography: ‘home.movie’ (2008), ‘Fenster/Drei sätze’ (2006), ‘Handbikemovie’ (2003).
