‘Dream of Life’ is a cinematic plunge into the creative spirit of Patti Smith, a breathing collage of her philosophy and artistry. Shot over a remarkable 11-year period by renowned fashion photographer Steven Sebring, Dream of Life is unprecedented in its lyricism and its intimate access to an icon. Smith narrates and provides lyrics, spoken word, interviews, photographs and concert footage. Sebring’s connection to Smith allows him to plum the history of several cultural movements. The film incorporates performances, pilgrimages and political rallies, archival recordings and verite footage of Smith’s parents, children and friends and is layered with music and recitations. ‘Dream of Life’ reveals a complicated and charismatic personality as Smith wrestles with the many paradoxes of human nature.
