The Sandu family got three kilos of rice from the state as a compensation for their bombed house in Grozny. After that not much was left of the lives of three women – grandmother, mother, daughter. Vladlena Sandu tells a thoughtful and dignified tale of physical and psychological trauma and the normal life of a refugee, including dog food, trauma certificate, homelessness and intensive care. Putin’s thanks on New Year’s Day are meant for the terrorism-fighting home country. Words fail them. Silence. Turmoil. Bewilderment.
Vladlena Sandu is a director, born in Crimea. In 1988, she moved with her family to Grozny where she studied at the Musical College (1989–1994). In 1998, she was displaced from her home to the Stavropol Krai region of Russia. She studied at the Rodchenko School of Photography (2010–2011). In 2011, she started studying for a degree in Directing at the Russian State University of Cinema (VGIK), under the tutelage of Alexey Uchitel. Her debut short filmKira won the jury prize at Sochi’s Kinotavr Film Festival 2015, as well as the prize for best directing and cinematography at the VGIK International Festival.
