ZagrebDox Pro is an educational and training program that brings together documentary filmmakers aiming to support their work through analysis of their submitted projects, as well as case studies, group and individual discussions, masterclass lectures, special film screenings and round tables. ZagrebDox Pro participants will exchange knowledge and experience with top European, world and Croatian experts in the field of documentary production, distribution and promotion.

This year’s edition focuses on in-depth research of limited-run documentary series.

From the way of thinking about ideas, building interest in the audiovisual ecosystem, possible approaches to production, all the way to distribution and promotion models.

Although until a few years ago it seemed that documentary series would sink into the routine of life on “small screens”, the rapid development of streaming services as well as social networks gave these forms a new impetus. It is interesting that a whole series of new formats developed during that period, and those on social networks are particularly interesting - primarily on platforms such as YouTube and TikTok, as well as large commercial projects on all streaming platforms.

The main purpose of this program is supporting the selected documentary series in their development, but also to bring closer the opportunity to present them to television, producers, financiers and distributors. Mentors as well as various lecturers and colleagues help support this process through the workshop. This year, some of the key professionals in the world of documentary series, from the BBC, Al Jazeera, HBO and HRT, have gathered in these roles at ZagrebDox Pro.

The program strives to assist the participants with working individually on developing their projects with renowned documentary film experts and getting a “second opinion” from experts in the fields not directly connected, but close to documentary filmmaking. The idea is to give the opportunity to participants to learn through case studies of successful limited-run documentary series and to network with colleagues from different backgrounds promoting their projects during production and upon completion.

Following the intention of providing as many possibilities as possible for selected projects to participate in workshops, festivals and industry events, ZagrebDox continues to achieve collaborations with other organizations in the world of documentaries. This year’s edition is organized in collaboration with Aljazeera and AJB DOC Film Festival, Sarajevo, as well as in partnership with Restart and Dokukino KIC.

ZagrebDox PRO takes place free of charge and is supported by the City of Zagreb, Croatian Audiovisual Centre, Croatian Film Directors’ Guild and Kultura nova Foundation.
