Writer of O

Pola Rapaport

When ‘’The Story of O’’ was first published in France in 1954, the public was quite upset with its sadomasochistic content, but also curious to discover the name behind the pseudonym of Pauline Réage. The finger stopped at the famous writer Jean Paulhan since he wrote the introduction, and what’s more important, nobody even thought to consider that such juicy stuff could have been written by a woman! Forty years later, the journalist and essayist Dominique Aury publicly claimed her credits for the book and revealed that the series of lascivious ‘’submissions’’ was written as a love letter to Paulhan, who had been her lover at the time. Apart from doing an interview with the almost hundred- year-old lady, the director also talked with her publisher, and has done some nice scenes with actors who reenacted certain stories from both the book and life of Aury and Paulhan.
