‘It’s a difficult task being a survivor,' says one of the inhabitants of Cinquera, a tiny town in El Salvador. He really knows what he’s talking about. Cinquera suffered a terrible fate during the country’s 12-year civil war: It was bombed and destroyed, and most of its inhabitants were killed. But in a moving example of their love of life, at the end of the conflict the survivors returned to their town, rebuilt their homes and moved on, resurrecting the near-dead town. In her first feature documentary, director Tatiana Huezo follows the remarkable story of Cinquera. She does not recreate the horror but counterpoints the quiet scenes of today’s life with the epic and sometimes terrible tales of the survivors.
Tatiana Huezo, born in 1972, San Salvador, El Salvador, grew up in Mexico, where she studied at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica in Mexico City; she earned her master’s degree in documentary filmmaking at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. She has been making short films since late the 1990s. Her feature-length documentary debut The Tiniest Place (2011) achieved singular international success. Tempestad is her second feature.
