In the car headlights or the glow of a petrol pump, Kabul’s night-time road-sweepers shift heavy dust down an avenue – a Sisyphean job that says much about the state of the country. Between passes of the broom, they reflect on their lives, or explain life’s hardships to their children. An entire ravaged country’s murky situation and faint hope emerge from their stories. Dusty Night is a documentary hewn in rough stone, a bitter essay on the human condition. The atmosphere of the streets and their endless haze, the dusky city lights shrouded in eternal dust: these images stay with the viewer long after the film ends. It is a kind of descent into hell, but this is very much an earthly reality.
Ali Hazara was born in 1977 in a remote village in Wardak Province of Afghanistan. His family soon emigrated to Iran where he spent his childhood. He returned to Afghanistan in 2004 and started to work in films with Atelier Varan in 2007.
