Transgender people are highly persecuted in Africa. The exception is Cape Verde, where you can find the most respected trans women. Called Tchindas, we meet them in the month leading up to what is considered to be Africa's best Carnival celebration.

2014 ZagrebDox Pro Awards Presented!

HBO Adria Award for Best Pitch went to the project “Tchindas”. The project “In Search of a Lost Country” won the ZagrebDox Pro Award for Best Project and the Sheffiled Doc/Fest Marketplace.

Of 13 selected projects from 12 countries, three projects won awards as part of The Reality Check Workshop. HBO Adria Award for Best Pitch went to the project Tchindas (by Marc Serena, Pablo García Pérez de Lara) and includes 2000 € for further project development, given by HBO Adria. The project In Search of a Lost Country by Marija Ratković Vidaković and producer Isa Živanović won the ZagrebDox Pro Award for Best Project. The award also includes a one-year mentorship by Rada Šešić. The project In Search of a Lost Country by Marija Ratković Vidaković and producer Isa Živanović won the Sheffiled Doc/Fest Marketplace award which includes a Sheffield Doc accreditation and one-xear mentorship by Charlie Phillips as a preparation for MeetMarket. The projects were previously presented to a panel of editors consisting of: Lejla Dedić, Aleksandra Derewienko, Ryan Harrington, Peter Jäger, Hanka Kastelicová, Vanja Kranjac, Catherine Le Clef, Sanja Ravlić, Charlie Phillips, Dr. Claudia Schreiner, Rada Šešić, Wim Van Rompaey and Robert Tomić Zuber.

'Tchindas' Wins Award at Outfest

Tchindas

The LA festival jury acknowledges the quality of the documentary pitched at ZagrebDox 2014.

The documentary film Tchindas, directed by Marc Serena and Pablo Garcia Perez de Lara, had its world premiere at Outfest Los Angeles festival, winning a Grand Jury special mention. The jury awarded the authors for a brilliant and masterfully directed intimate portrayal of Cape Verde’s brave transgender community.

The Hollywood Reporter
described Tchindas as a beautifully made vérité chronicle of painstaking preparations for the São Vicente carnival, taking place on the second most inhabited Cape Verde island.
