Kim Longinotto arriving to ZagrebDox!

02.02.2015.

The British documentarian, whose film have for 40 years been giving a voice to the oppressed, marginalised and abused women all over the world, is the special guest of the 11th ZagrebDox.

One of the most significant documentary filmmakers today, the master of portraits and powerful female stories, Kim Longinotto is the winner of this year’s My Generation Award, presented by ZagrebDox director Nenad Puhovski. The 11th festival programme features two of her films, and in the ZagrebDox Pro section Longinotto will have a masterclass.

Only a few weeks after the world premiere in Sundance’s competition, ZagrebDox’s international competition screens Kim Longinotto’s latest film Dreamcatcher. This is a colourful portrayal of a former Chicago-based prostitute Brenda Myers-Powell, following her attempts to use her experience to help young girls and women off the streets, trapped in a vicious circle of violence and exploitation. The Masters of Dox section screens Love Is All: 100 Years of Love and Courtship, exploring love and courtship on film in the 20th century. Completely made out of archive materials, this documentary covers a broad range of topics and events, from the first kiss ever on the silver screen, to the gay rights movement. The mentioned films are to screen in a new special programme ZagrebDoXXL, including a double feature and a moderated Q&A Session with the director and her long-time associate, editor Ollie Huddleston.

Kim Longinotto is a British documentarian, internationally acclaimed for her outstanding human portrayals and a compassionate approach to unknown subjects. The main part of her work are observational documentaries focusing on the position of women in contemporary society, from Egypt and Iran to Japan and Sub-Saharan Africa. A special trait of her work is the recognisable unimposing style giving her protagonists a voice and presence and efficiently avoiding western feminist stereotypes against the so-called Third World women portrayed as victims and not as change drivers. Since 1976 she directed, filmed and produced around 20 films and won awards at festivals like Cannes, Sundance, IDFA, Chicago and many others. The previous editions of ZagrebDox screened her films Salma (2013), Pink Saris (2010), Rough Aunties (2008), Sisters in Law (2005) and Gaea Girls (2000).

Kim Longinotto’s arrival in Zagreb and visit to the 11th ZagrebDox will be covered by the festival’s media partners HRT and HRT3.
