Croatian soldier Ivan Hiti received a command to burn down the oldest and largest Serbian Orthodox Church library in Croatia.

Pakrac, Croatia, winter 1992. The war is raging. Croatian soldier Ivan Hiti received a command to burn down the oldest and largest Serbian Orthodox Church library in Croatia. Instead of destroying it, Hiti organised the books to be transferred to Zagreb. When he returned to his unit, he was dishonourably discharged for having disobeyed the orders, laid off, and has never served in a public office since. He was even called a traitor on the local radio. The moral act of saving cultural goods became Hiti’s life punishment.
