The guaranteed basic income is back as an alternative to the principle of rights and duties, and to the bureaucratic economic system. At least it is back in the public debate, and the idea that everyone over the age of 21 should have a fixed monthly allowance, regardless of whether they work or not, really divides opinions. Yet, not along the lines of traditional political dichotomies. Neo-conservative economists, ultraliberals and socialists are all in favour, while everyone else is strongly against. Politics and economics meet psychology and philosophical questions about human nature. Will it make people lazy? Or will it free them? And what about the robots which will in a very near future actually make most jobs redundant?
Christian Tod was born in 1977 in Linz, Austria. He is an accomplished economist, currently working on his dissertation thesis about unconditional basic income. His debut film Fatsy – The Last Cowboy of Austria (2007) received an honorable mention at Crossing Europe Film Festival Linz. His first feature length documentary was Es muss was geben (2010) established him as an auteur filmmaker. Free Lunch Society (2017) is his latest documentary.
