When Russian troops invaded Ukraine in February 2022, classrooms fell silent. Soon, schools were destroyed by the relentless shelling. Almost a year on, classes have started again, and schools are being rebuilt with EU humanitarian support. In When I Grow Up three tenacious young Ukrainians resume their education despite the fighting. By giving them a voice, ‘Education, no matter what’ campaign documents their ambitions and courage in a country devastated by war. Ukraine is not the only country where access to quality education is disrupted, as this is the case for millions of children caught in many humanitarian crises around the world.
Claire Billet has been working in conflict zones since 2004 as a freelance correspondent for French media and TV channels (Arte, France 24…), mainly based out of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Since 2011, her work has focused on the consequences of conflicts and war, especially concerning migrations. In 2015 Claire published Kotchok, sur la route avec les migrants along with photographs by Olivier Jobard. Her recent video documentary projects received various international prizes (Coeur de Pierre, 2018 and Afghanistan: Pays meurtri par la guerre, 2020).
Olivier Jobard has covered many conflicts around the world for the last 30 years: Bosnia, Chechnya, Afghanistan, Sudan, Liberia, Iraq and more. In 2000, he travelled to Sangatte, a French camp for illegal migrants. There, he met Afghans, Bosnians, Chechens, coming from all these countries Olivier had gone to for news coverage, for the fighting, for the war... Without seeing the broader consequences on the people. From this moment, he decided to dedicate his work to the underreported issues of migration. Olivier's approach evolved into a long-term documentary work focusing on human stories, getting as close as possible to the migrants and refugees, staying with them on the long run, as a way to give them back their humanity. Olivier Jobard is represented by French agency MYOP.
