Athens Through the Hoops

Amalia Zepou

Greek director Amalia Zepos has explored the four-year preparations for the 2004 summer Olympics in Athens. The Olympic Games are always a demanding project; as the city where modern Olympic movement was launched way back in 1896, Athens was under particular pressure. This fascinating film asks a number of questions: Will everything be ready in time? Will the security be on the required level? Have the ideals of the 1896 Olympics been reached? Is it all really worth the effort? The author is trying to find the answers by studying the Games’ impact on the citizens and by talking to everybody, from politicians to local prostitutes.
