The Amateurs and the General

Helge Cramer

Ten years after the war in Bosnia was over, the Old Bridge in Mostar has been reconstructed. The director wonders whether the bridge’s symbolical purpose – to be a link between Catholics and Moslems – can actually be achieved? Can the people who peacefully coexisted and respected each other before the war now refresh the old memories and forget the hatred cause by the war: Safet, the oldest Moslem merchant from the bridge, who lost his faith in European culture after the war; Goran, former leader of the well-known bridge divers who lost his brother during the war; and General Praljak, Goran’s former neighbor, who for the first time gets a chance to tell his version of the events here. The story about the reconstruction of the bridge is entwined with the reconstruction of their lives and former friendships.
