For perhaps the most ambitious project in its famed history, the Metropolitan Opera commissioned visionary director Robert Lepage to stage a new production of opera's most formidable masterpiece: Richard Wagner's four-part Ring Cycle. Shot over five years, Susan Froemke's documentary captures the unprecedented challenges of bringing Lepage's electrifying production to life. Featuring such opera luminaries as Deborah Voigt, the film is a rare and engrossing look at the artistic process.
Susan Froemke (born 1947) is an American non-fiction filmmaker with more than thirty documentary films to her credit from the influential Grey Gardens (1976) to Lalee's Kin (2001) that was nominated for an Academy Award. A four-time Emmy Award winner, in 2002, Froemke received a Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video for her work on Recording the Producers – A Musical Romp with Mel Brooks. From 2009 to 2012, Froemke collaborated with Matthew Heineman on Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2012. Froemke has been in production on Wagner's Dream for more than four years, filming in New York, Montreal and Quebec City.
