Crime docu-drama genre is a lower-level documentary genre. It is a TV genre, nonauthorial, dealing with black chronicle subjects, determined by a simple representational and narrative procedure. Crime docu-dramas never appear in cinema listings or at film festivals. In crime docu-dramas the victim is most often a prostitute or a wife. The wife is in danger for the first time when she gets married, and for the second time when she takes out her life insurance policy. No need guessing who the killer is. In crime docu-dramas there are no nuanced stories. There are only two extremes: insanely banal plots, or insanely incredible plots. The Imposter is one such insanely incredible story. However, The Imposter appeared in ZagrebDox’s selection. Before that, Layton’s film won numerous awards. Apparently, this crime docu-drama ‘crosses boundaries. Without changing the subject and style, The Imposter has risen from the sphere of lower-ranking TV programmes to the prestigious world of film festivals.
