The classical architecture of this Austro-Hungarian edifice seems to be the ideal theatrical setting for various kitsch events.

The building of the old Austro-Hungarian high school in Zagreb was hastily transformed into a museum to house the art collection of the controversial collector Ante Topić Mimara. Its loving nickname 'the Zagreb Louvre' best portrays the hopes placed on this venture. Today, the Zagreb Louvre stands bare counting its visitors in single-digit numbers. Its accompanying commercial activities – fashion shows, painting auctions, book promotions, meetings of regional clubs – are, however, well attended. The classical architecture of this Austro-Hungarian edifice seems to be the ideal theatrical setting for various kitsch events. After all, the late benefector did always consider Croatians to be ‘a very primitive people’.
