The director used the fate of her friend Bilja as a role model of a generation of young people who spent their teenage days in the war-torn Sarajevo. In 1992, Bilja was severely wounded during one shelling. She lost her arm and a French photographer was making pictures of her while she was bleeding in the street, helpless. He did not help her. The photograph won him fame and World Press Photo Award for 1993. And what was Biljana’s fate?
Jasmila Žbanić is an award-winning director, screenwriter and producer born in Sarajevo in 1974. She graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo, Department of Theatre and Film Directing. In 1997, together with her friends, she founded an artists' association, Deblokada, through which she produced, wrote and directed many feature films, documentaries, and video works. Her first feature film Grbavica was awarded the Golden Bear at Berlinale in 2006. Her other films include: On The Path (2010), For Those Who Can Tell No Tales (2012), Love Island (2014) and One Day In Sarajevo (2015).
