The controversial Croatian film director Lordan Zafranović is in voluntary exile in Prague. The film follows his rise from a talented outsider to the famed Yugoslav director of the acclaimed war film Occupation in 26 Pictures, shown in Cannes Film Festival competition in 1979. His life story is an unconventional description of a rise and fall and reveals the compromises he made in order to survive as an artist during communism, as well as missed opportunities and wrong judgments which later made it impossible for him to adapt. Is charismatic Zafranović a national traitor or a victim of historical circumstances in which he only, as he said, wanted to be himself and make movies?
