Killswitch and Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story in State of Affairs

20.02.2015.

The 11th ZagrebDox State of Affairs section shows a series of films focusing on burning issues like environment, internet freedom, the influence of technology on society, tax evasion and human rights.

Opposite the already presented documentary Project Wild Thing, State of Affairs includes the documentary that focuses on internet freedom, Killswitch by Ali Akbarzadeh, about one of the hottest present-day battles for the control on the example of hacktivists Aaron Schwartz and Edward Snowden. The film raises a question if they are a warning to all who try to harm power structures, or a spark for a revolution set to redefine democracy in the digital era. Killswitch is a safety mechanism turning a device down in emergency situations like thefts, when the owner cannot turn it off.

Also, director Grant Baldwin focuses on the issue of food waste, but in an unusual way – he decided to survive only of thrown away food. In America, a country where one in 10 people is potentially hungry, the images of wasted food are shocking and incredibly impressive. For the film Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story Baldwin won the best Canadian director award at Hot Docs, the VIFF Impact Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival, an audience award in Calgary in 2014 and the best documentary film award in Edmonton.
