A soccer referee needs to be everywhere, see everything, and stay on the ball for the full 90 minutes. Every decision comes under close scrutiny – from commentators, from players contesting each whistle blow as if it were an unforgivable injustice, and from that multi-headed monster: the crowd. And besides dealing with the constant, intense pressure, you’ve got to be able to cover around 7 miles over the course of the match. The Game follows a top-tier Swiss match through the eyes of world-class ref Fedayi San. With him, we experience the highs and lows of a football game, what it means to earn respect on the field and direct the energy of an entire stadium.

Roman Hodel

Roman Hodel, born in 1989. in Zurich, studied at the Video Department of the Lucerne School of Art and Design (HSLU) and works as filmmaker and cinematographer. His short film Bluelight (2014, co-directed with Lena Mäder) premiered at the International Short Film Festival Winterthur and The Game (2020) had its world premiere at the 77th Venice International Film Festival.
