Ten Directors & Two Films: ZagrebDox Summer
After last year's successful premier hosting of ZagrebDox at the Tuškanac Summer Stage, it is time for a reunion. July 25 and 26 are reserved for documentaries.
The two-day ZagrebDox Summer program will open with the film Eight Chapters. One of the most watched films of this year's ZagrebDox tackles zhe fact that we live in a predominantly male world, and maybe the most important task women have is creating their own identity. We are guided through the path of eight decades of life by eight female characters, starting from the youngest one who is at the age of five, to the oldest one at the age of 85. Tila is bravely pedalling towards growing up. Jana can set a great example for both younger and older people around her. Tina waits for her sudden growing-up milestone with excitement. Ana Marija is at the end of her 20s with a dash of fear... Eight authors directed a documentary omnibus which offers us an opportunity to observe the creation of these identities and surpassing the obstacles laid ahead of a little girl, a teenager, a woman, a mother, a non-mother and a grandmother. The film was directed by Jasmina Beširević, Dalija Dozet, Tonći Gaćina, Judita Gamulin, Tiha K. Gudac, Anja Koprivšek, Katarina Lukec i Petar Vukičević.
Eight Chapters on Tuesday is followed by And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine on Wednesday, a film that successfully opened this year's ZagrebDox. It is a thought-provoking examination of humanity’s infatuation with itself, and with framing the world through the camera’s lens. Filmmakers Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck turn their cameras directly on society to explore, explain and expose how our unchecked obsession with image has grown to change our human behavior. Using a mind-boggling array of archival footage they collage this emblematic study of cinema and the social history it creates: What are the implications of being exposed to the billions of images competing for our attention? Balancing critical examination with delightful surprises, they put their footage in cacophonous, lively, enlightening conversation in this awarded documentary.
