Without a single word and in a very poetical way, this documentary starts with a beautiful scene of sunrise and awakening of nature... However, the story makes a turnaround when scenes of little birds and appertaining charming animals are replaced with so-called ‘poetry of ugliness’ – a waste dump and its appertaining ‘ugly’ animals: mice, rats and a ‘gang’ from the nearby swamp. The waste – useless objects of the people of the nearby town, has now become useful for somebody else. We witness everything, from newlyborn mice to bulldozers digging up the garbage and making space for the new one. The next day, the score is being made – who ate whom, who survived... and life goes on.
Laila Pakalnina
Laila Pakalnina was born 1962 in Liepaja, Latvia. She studied television journalism at the University of Moscow and went on to study film at the Moscow Film Institute (VGIK), Department of Film Direction, graduating in 1991. She lives and works in Riga. She wrote and directed of 19 documentaries, five shorts, three feature-lentgh fictions. Several of her films have already been screened at previous ZagrebDox editions.
